Eligibility Requirements

To apply for a Canadian study permit, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Acceptance Letter You must have an official letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) approved to host international students.
  • Proof of Intent to Leave You must convince the immigration officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires.
  • Financial Support You need to show that you can:
  • Pay your tuition fees
  • Support yourself (and any accompanying family members) during your stay
  • Afford return transportation for yourself and any accompanying dependents
  • Clean Criminal Record You must have no criminal history and be willing to follow Canadian laws. A police certificate may be required.
  • Good Health You must be in good health and may be asked to undergo a medical exam.
  • General Admissibility You must meet Canada’s general entry requirements.
  • Additional Requirement for Quebec If studying in Quebec, you must also obtain a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ).

Eligible family members may accompany you to Canada by applying for their own study or work permits.

How to Apply for a Study Permit

Check Your Eligibility
Before starting the application, ensure you meet all IRCC requirements. This step helps avoid wasted time and unnecessary expenses. Once confirmed—especially your acceptance at a DLI—you can begin your application.

Gather all necessary documentation, including:
